Halloween Events 2011: Have a Haunted Halloween!

It is Halloween weekend! To really get into the spirit, try one of these events, from scary to cute.

               

Haunts:


Lime Toasted Pumpkin Seeds


These are delicious sprinkled on soups and salads, and eaten as a snack.

               

Ingredients:

  • 6 tablespoons of lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of raw pumpkin seeds

Directions:

  1. In small bowl mix lime juice and salt until salt dissolves.
  2. In a dry heavy frying pan, toast seeds over med. heart until they snap and change color.  Be sure to stir seeds in pan constantly.
  3. Remove pan from heat and add lime juice.  
  4. Stir until all seeds are coated and allow to dry.

Ghostly Craft


Ghost Feet--but ghosts don't have feet!

Ghost feet! This is fun and easy. You can use as much or as little decorating as you want with these.

               

Materials:

  • White paper
  • Pencil or marker to trace
  • Googly eyes (or black marker)
  • Children's feet!
  • glitter, crayons or anything for embellishing (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place white paper on floor.
  2. Have your child stand still on paper while you trace one or both feet. 
  3. Be sure to trace around the tops of the toes. 
  4. Cut out feet
  5. Have the child decorate with eyes, etc. 
  6. Write your child's name and ...

Get in the car with your teen and turn on the music. After driving for a little while, turn off the music. She swears they can't help but fill the silence. She felt is was a great way to get her teen boy to open up.

Themes of scarecrows should be child-friendly however, entrants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild! Prizes will be awarded for the Best Traditional Harvest Figure, Best Animal-Related Figure, Best Whimsical Figure (celebrity, fantasy, action figure, etc.), and Most Original/Best in Show. All children participating in the contest will get a pass for free admission to the Zoo. Contest creation kicks off on October 1st. Completed scarecrows must be dropped off by 3:00 pm on October 19 and will be showcased for all Zoo visitors to see during "Scarecrows on Parade," which runs October 21 through October 30. 18th Century Neapolitan Creche at the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, CT The Crèche contains 68 figures between 14-16 inches high.  The figures, made of carved wood, terra cotta, porcelain and jute, are situated in a small village made primarily of the bark of cork trees that evokes the local surroundings of the Neapolitan artists of the time.  Dressed in their original 18th-century costumes, the figures vividly portray, in addition to the Holy Family, children, old and young women bearing gifts, merchants and peddlers, a princess and her whippet, angels, the Three Kings and peasants and their farm animals.

Trunk or Treat at Bridgewater Center in Bridgewater, CT What is Trunk or Treat?   It is a Halloween event where people from a community gather together in a large, safe environment and give out treats from the trunks of their cars.   Participants in this event usually will decorate their trunks with Halloween décor, as they would their front porch. Calling all Cars:  Decorate your vehicle’s trunk and give out goodies to Trick-or-Treaters!   Register your trunk at the Bridgewater Town Hall :  about 200 revelers expected.

Last year was my first October in Georgia, and I was still growing accustomed to the traditions of the South....the warmer weather, the SEC mania, the grits (okay, I'm still not used to those!).  Imagine my surprise when my doorbell rang around 9 pm one night, and when I opened my door, all I found was a goodie bag filled with treats and a sign that said "You've Been BOO-ed!"
