A Beautiful Weekend is Heading Our Way

Editor's Note

Power is still not on for 22 people. It has only been four days for us. I am still catching up on laundry and cleaning that could not happen while the power was out.

I feel a bit like a survivor. I traded "what did you do during the black out" tales with neighbors and friends. All of us have exercised our resiliency muscle over the last few weeks and we have learned we can handle stuff like this.

As adults, we have had a lot of practice flexing our "coping skills". How can we help our kids learn how to overcome challenges? Read the essay written by Tracy LeFevre, director of Misty Morning Children's Center.

Last Week to Enter to Win Basically Ballroom Lessons and Phineas and Ferb:

The holidays are fast approaching and the time for the Basically Ballroom dance lessons for adults or children giveaway and the Phineas and Ferb giveaway (ends on Monday) is quickly coming to an end.

New Giveaway:

Lego Kids Fest is coming to Hartford and we have two free tickets to giveaway for the Sunday 3-7:30 session! See magnificent Lego structures, help build a mystery mural, see a ton of vendors (like me!), and see Lego Master Builders. It's not just for boys, either.

Discounts:

Because you are a Macaroni Kid reader, you can take your family out for less with discounts on two great events. The first is the Phineas and Ferb Live discount for the 4 PM show on November 19th.

The newest discount is for LEGO Kids Fest. LEGO is bringing Kids Fest to Hartford again you can get a $2 discount on any Kids Fest tickets you need to purchase buy using code MACKID11.

Holidays on the Horizon:

Thanksgiving is only two weeks away! I can hardly believe it. A friend of mine is already cooking. Me? I am working on my menu. While we have many of the same dishes every year, I do like to add in one or two new ones and possibly retire a less-loved dish.

A dish I will not be making in our house this year is creamed pearl onions. My mother-in-law made this especially for my husband when I met him and I always made it too--it was a tradition. Turns out he doesn't actually like it. At all.

What are some of your favorite dishes and what are some others that got kicked to the curb? I would love to know if you have a big gathering and how you plan for it, or if, like me, it is mostly immediate family. Leave a comment!

For Christmas, Hunt Hill Farm hasn't sold out all of the seats to the Gingerbread Box class yet Sign up quickly! All of the Gingerbread House classes are waiting list only already. If you already have a tradition of taking your kids out for a Christmas show or event, then you know now is the time to buy tickets.

Check out the calendar for Nutcracker ballets, Christmas Choral performances, Christmas craft activities, Santa train rides, and other seasonal gems and buy tickets as soon as you can.

There is No "Can't", but There is "Try"

Food for Thought

Our Fall session is well under way and the children have settled into their new routines. You may hear them at home talking about there is no "can't" at Misty Morning, but there is "try".

Often a child will say, "I can't put my coat on." When we ask them to try two times, most often the child can do the task. The excitement and empowerment on the child's face is magical.

We want children to not be fearful of taking on the challenges of life. In ...
