Heading for a SMART New Year

Editor's Note

My children had a grand Christmas Day. They had so many wonderful presents from their grandmother that it took about two hours to open everything they received. My four year-old boy received a lot of "tools". My ten year-old has enough craft kits to last the whole year. My twelve year-old was fun to watch as she tried to remove her own pearl from an oyster without actually touching the oyster.

The novelty of the new toys means that I have had a number of pleasant hours when the kids are entertaining themselves. Along with quite a few hours of referreeing as they try to figure out how to play together on a few the gifts for the whole family.

New Year's is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the idea of a universally recognized "fresh start". It is a time of reflection and to take stock of where we are and where we would like to be.

It is easy to make sweeping declarations of change. Most experts recommend less dramatic, SMART goal setting. SMART is all you need to remember. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timed.

Spending the time to make sure your goals are SMART will help you really think through the steps needed to succeed. Don't forget to include your children in the New Year's planning. Goal setting is a wonderful skill to learn.

Many wishes for a healthy, happy, and awesome New Year!

Throw a "Noon" Year's Eve Party!

What fun is New Year's Eve to a kid who's in bed by 8 pm? Let younger children join in the festivities of New Year's Eve by hosting a "Noon" Year's Eve party or playdate.

For snacks, get cheese cubes, pieces of fruit and hot dog pieces and stick them with toothpicks. All kids love eating bite-sized foods from toothpicks. You can even get fancy and use the kind with frilly colors on the ends.

Get paper streamers from your local party store for kids and ...
