Snowy Days

Editor's Note

- Being a fan of Dr. Mel and his forecasts, I was saddened to hear of his passing. I will miss his reports.

The weather looks like we will get some more snow tomorrow and this weekend. After sledding, building a snow man, making snow angels, and building a fort for the snowball fight, be sure to enjoy hot chocolate and popcorn. That is our favorite way of warming up after playing in the snow.

- Where are your favorite sledding hills? Send your suggestions to [email protected] and let me know. While we usually sled down a hill in our front yard, my older kids are ready for something more adventurous. I often see lots of cars parked on Heritage Road next to the golf course in Southbury. What other great locations are there?

- Looking for other ways to enjoy your indoor time? How about a little kitchen science? You can make popcorn kernels float with a few household items. We have a fun craft for the kids to try out: make your own glass magnets. There is nothing like a little spice to warm you up! Try this recipe for enchiladas.

- If you hurry, there is still time to enter our giveaway for a family four pack of tickets to Stepping Stones which can be used on the date of your choosing now through April so you can enjoy the Run! Jump! Fly! exhibit. How is the exhibit? Check out my review of Run! Jump! Fly! at Stepping Stones

Speaking of Stepping Stones, I will be announcing a special Stepping Stones giveaway on Facebook tomorrow.

Our Monster Jam at the XL Center giveaway (you get to choose the date you go) is ending next week. That isn't much time to enter. Don't miss out--enter today!

- Since I receive some nice feedback on this section (thanks, D.), I decided to leave it in for a second week:

It's time to register for kindergarten. My guy is old enough, but I still can hardly believe he could be going to a building filled with hundreds of kids in just eight months. If you want to be sure your child is ready for kindergarten, check out the free resources at Get Ready to Read for free early learning resources, Starfall for free phonics and reading lessons, or head to the book store or library for Bob Books which teach kids how to read by introducing a few new sounds or sight words at a time and helps them practice.

- By the way, I love hearing what you think. Just e-mail me at [email protected] with suggestions, your favorite places to take your kids, events I should include in the calendar, anything! If you host an event and want to get the word out, just fill out our handy event submission form.

- Here are the quick links to this weekend's calendar of events:

Check back often for updates and don't forget Facebook, where new items are often posted.

The Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is observed for two weeks.  The timing varies based on the changes in the track of the new moon, but it generally begins in late January or early February.  In the year 2012, the Chinese New Year begins on January 23rd.  The New Year's Festival will be celebrated from midnight of January 22nd (Chinese New Year's Eve) to February 6th (Lantern Festival).

Based on the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2012 is the year of the dragon.  The dragon is the 5th sign ...

FMX Motocross Review-What Moms Should Know

Would I Recommend it? Read to the bottom.

The FELD Entertainment people (the promotion group for FMX Freestyle Motocross) invited me to review the FMX Freestyle show at the Webster Arena last night. I'm a mom with two girls and a four year-old boy. I hadn't really considered taking the girls to the show, but figured we would make a family evening out of it.

FMX is performed with motocross bikes. The riders go up ramps placed 60 feet across. I have never been to a freestyle motocross event before, so walking into the Arena and ...

Make Corn Kernels Float-A Kitchen Science Activity

  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup of baking soda

Family Fun Jar

Last week we took our daughter to see the Laurie Berkner Band and we were inspired by the song “FAMILY.” It made us think how we as a family interact, how we work together, how we play together, how we connect as a family, how we spend time together as a family.

Often our family wakes on a Saturday wondering “what do we do today?” Do we hop in the car with no destination in site? Do we go to a local park? Do we sit at home and do ...
