Are You Ready for the Big Game?
Editor's Note
I had a pretty weird week. I came down with something (yuck) and then had a run in with my daughter's school (I'm still trying to figure it out). I am really looking forward to relaxing this weekend and getting my mind off of things. We'll be heading to the Big Y Kids Fair on Saturday. It should be fun to walk around. If you want to read my report to see if you should head out on Sunday, then "like" Macaroni Kid on Facebook and I'll post a link to my write up.
Saturday night is a great night to prepare some appetizers for the Big Game on Sunday. My hometown team is the Eagles, so I don't have a dog in this particular fight, but my husband is a Patriots fan. If you are looking for a recipe for the game, you can try these pizza puffs or these buffalo chicken meatballs.
In only one week, The Palace Theater in Waterbury will have Shrek the Musical as part of its Broadway Series! I've heard great things about this adaptation of the family-favorite film--which is one of my favorite kid's movies for adults. Not only is the play in Waterbury, but two Macaroni Kid families could be winners of family four packs to see the show on Friday night! Enter now because the giveaway ends on Wednesday!
- Giveaways:
- Winter Wonderland Ball at Stepping Stones in Norwalk
- Shrek Broadway Play at the Palace Theater in Waterbury
- Harlem Globetrotters in Hartford at the XL Center.
- It is time to research day cares and preschools for the coming year if that is part of your plan.
- Macaroni Kid has a big list of area restaurants that offer free and cheap kids' meal deals. Did I miss one? Let me know at [email protected]
- You probably know other moms who would love to hear about the great things going on for kids and families in our area. Forward our newsletter to them. There is even a handy button at the top of the right-hand column, or on the bottom, if you read that far.
- Here are the quick links to this weekend's calendar of events where there are many more activities listed:
- Friday, February 3rd
- Saturday, February 4th--it's the first national Library Day! Check your library and our calendar for special events at your local public library.
- Sunday, February 5th

The pre-school recognizes that a child’s work is play. As a child plays, he or she learns about the world. Our classroom is divided into several interest areas to encourage a child’s curiosity and creativity. A child’s positive self-image is fostered through mastering new concepts and experiences. Positive social skills are encouraged through group activities. Literacy is introduced through a print rich environment, phonemic awareness activities (songs, rhymes, and poems) and high-quality children’s literature. Mathematical concepts are introduced by blocks building, water play, cooking and by exploration of simple experiments. Fine muscle control is mastered by the use of table activities, puzzles, painting, cutting, gluing, and clay. Gross motor coordination is encouraged by outdoor play. Contact St. James at 203-264-6448
Brown Tufts Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten
Montessori classrooms offer a mixed-age setting, which means that 3-, 4-, and 5-year olds all share their experiences and support each other. The youngest learn from the oldest, who quickly become leaders. “I think one of our strongest points is that the children come together to form a community. They learn to take care of each other and to respect their peers, their environment, and themselves,” said Nana Sledzieski, the Head of School. It is the aim of the teachers to create a space where children learn to be capable, confident, and respectful in a calm environment.
