Paint the People New Milford 2013

Time to Party

Editor's Note

-The weather: The weekend starts off with some rain today and tomorrow morning but it clears out to a lovely afternoon with temps near 50! It looks like Saturday is going to be the pick of the weekend. If you want to do anything, especially outdoors, Saturday is going to have temperatures in the mid-40s according to WTNH. Clouds and maybe snow will be coming on Sunday. The models don't show a lot of accumulation, but it's too early to say. So if you head out to do your grocery shopping this weekend, you'll know why the stores are more crowded than usual.

- Help a mom out! February 17th is Random Act of Kindness Day. Be kind to a mom you know and forward Macaroni Kid to her. Let your friends and colleagues in on all of the great events in our area and the fun parenting info and articles.

- Find out how to get a share in a local farm and enjoy a variety of farm fresh food every week by looking into a local CSA (community supported agriculture). There are farms in Bethlehem, Oxford, Sandy Hook, Cheshire, Bethany, and more!

- There are some great days to observe this week. This is the week to celebrate Mardi Gras, the last hurrah before the restrictions of Lent. This year, Mardi Gras is celebrated on February 21st. Get into the carnival spirit by making a special Mardi Gras Mask out of duct tape. While I love the beads and green, purple and black of Mardi Gras, I prefer to think of Fat Tuesday as Pancake Day! Prior to Lent, the tradition was to use up some of the foods that wouldn't be consumed for Lent by making pancakes. Color your pancakes green and purple for the day.

- Take part in some "citizen science" this weekend and find out how to participate in the Backyard Bird Count from February 17th through February 20th. February 20th is also President's Day and the beginning of Winter Break for some school districts. You may be wondering what you can do with the kids while they are out of school. Here is a quick round up of special programs offered on President's Day and during winter break week.

- Giveaways are all ending today! Enter these now:

- It is time to register for day cares and preschools for the coming year. Brown Tufts Montessori and St. James Lutheran Preschool are very friendly and just waiting to show you around!

- Some great picks for this weekend:

- Macaroni Kid has a big list of area restaurants that offer free and cheap kids' meal deals.

- Here are the quick links to this weekend's calendar of events where there are many, many more activities listed:

St. James Lutheran Preschool

The pre-school recognizes that a child’s work is play.  As a child plays, he or she learns about the world.  Our classroom is divided into several interest areas to encourage a child’s curiosity and creativity.  A child’s positive self-image is fostered through mastering new concepts and experiences.  Positive social skills are encouraged through group activities.  Literacy is introduced through a print rich environment, phonemic awareness activities (songs, rhymes, and poems) and high-quality children’s literature.  Mathematical concepts are introduced by blocks building, water play, cooking and by exploration of simple experiments.  Fine muscle control is mastered by the use of table activities, puzzles, painting, cutting, gluing, and clay.  Gross motor coordination is encouraged by outdoor play. Brown Tufts Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten

Montessori classrooms offer a mixed-age setting, which means that 3-, 4-, and 5-year olds all share their experiences and support each other. The youngest learn from the oldest, who quickly become leaders. “I think one of our strongest points is that the children come together to form a community. They learn to take care of each other and to respect their peers, their environment, and themselves,” said Nana Sledzieski, the Head of School. It is the aim of the teachers to create a space where children learn to be capable, confident, and respectful in a calm environment. Contact Nana Sledzieski at 203-263-4600 or e-mail [email protected]

Kid Craft: Duct Tape Mardi Gras Masks

My daughter and I attended a festival quite a few months ago, where they were doing crafts with duct tape.  I, at the time, had never made anything with duct tape, so we nervously sat down and made a fabulous crown using only duct tape.

Ever since, I have found that you can make just about anything with duct tape.  Today, we are making Duct Tape Masks for Mardi Gras.

Material:

  • Duct Tape (in different colors). We used purple and green, since Mardi Gras colors are purple, green, and gold ...

How does it work?

Friday, February 17 through Saturday, February 18 - Lord of the Flies by the All-Male Woodhall Players at the Abigail J. Woodhall Performing Arts Center in Bethlehem, CT

The students will bring to life William Golding's classic, The Lord of the Flies, a story of the transference of "civilized" young men into savages when stranded on an island in the Pacific during World War II. The struggle between the Id, the Ego and the Superego is at the center of this drama.
Set during the Second World War, the play features a band of boys who survive a plane crash and try to set up a society without the aid of grown-ups. The result is a study of devolution into the depths of humans' animal nature including the killing of several undeserving victims. Fear is captured in a fictitious "Beast" which turns out to be within the boys rather than a threat from the outside.
