Macaroni Menus

You will need: 
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/8 cup water (more or less as needed)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, M&Ms, or other mix-ins
Directions: 
  1. Cream the butter and brown sugar together until smooth.
  2. Add the vanilla.
  3. Gradually add the flour until it is completely mixed.
  4. Add water to adjust the consistency of the dough.
  5. Fold in the mix-ins of choice.
  6. Enjoy!

Zucchini Lasagne

With most gardens overflowing with zucchini this time of the year, now is the perfect time to make this light but filling dish.

Makes 6-8 servings.

Ingredients:
  • 3 medium zucchini
  • salt
  • 32 oz jar of your favorite pasta sauce
  • 1 lb ground beef, turkey or chicken
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 (15-oz) container ricotta cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 8 oz shredded parmesan cheese
  • optional: 8 oz sliced mushrooms, 1 cup fresh spinach or frozen chopped spinach, thawed

During the August session of Outdoor Observations, students will create landscape sketches from the beautiful view of Walnut Hill Park in back of the NBMAA. Students will transfer these observational drawings to canvas in order to create an acrylic painting. The session will cover the basics of mixing acrylic paint to create colors natural to the environment as well as various methods of paint application. Here is a simple craft snack that your kids will love!

Fruit Flower Snack

Ingredients
    • Peanut Butter*
    • Strawberry, stem and hull removed
    • Apple, cut into wedges
    • Raisins (we used dried cranberries)

Instructions

An adult should do the cutting and your child can assemble the flower as follows:
  1. Spread peanut butter in the center of a plate with a child safe utensil.
  2. Put the strawberry upside down in the middle of the peanut butter.
  3. Place the apple wedges around the strawberry like flower petals.

Science Fun Summer Craft: Marshmallow Shooter


This is a really simple craft that leaves your mini macaroni with a fun toy to enjoy after! It's a marshmallow/pom pom shooter!

What you need:
2 plastic cups
1 balloon
scissors
marshmallows and/or pom poms


What you do:
Stack the 2 plastic cups and cut them about a third of the way down. (I used 2 for sturdiness. If you have a surdier cup, one will probably do)

Homemade Finger Paints


Materials:    
  • 3 Tbls sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 2 cups water
  • Food coloring 
Instructions:
  1. Combine all ingredients in small saucepan.
  2. Warm until mixture thickens, stirring with a whisk.
  3. Cool & pour into containers (I used 4 oz baby food jars)
  4. Add food coloring to create any color you'd like.
  5. Let the kids be creative!

Kid Summer Craft: Make Your own Moon Dough


I found this recipe for moon dough/cloud dough on Pinterest! It peaked my interest so we spent an afternoon playing in it.  It's really easy to make and both of my kids had a ball playing in the stuff. This could also be a great activity one day on Spring Break!

One of the best things about summer is all the fresh, seasonal produce! These homemade popsicles are full of sweet summer fruit and lots of great vitamins too. The combination of kiwis, peaches, and strawberries provides plenty of Vitamin A, C, and D, plus potassium, folate, and fiber!

Stoplight Frozen Pops

Oh yes, it is that time of the year. The kids are dying to get outside and play. The sun is shining and what is more fun than bubbles? Oh how kids love blowing bubbles.
But those bubbles get expensive when the bubble solution goes so fast. And my kids definitely go through it fast! My solution is to make my own bubble mixture for the kids.
