Halloween is Monday!

Editor's Note

By Kim McNeill October 27, 2011

This is going to be a crazy weekend for us. Not only do I want to take my kids out to do some Halloween events, we still need to carve pumpkins (talk about waiting until the last minute). I am also going to take the kids to Tech Fest.

We update the calendar frequently, so please check back often!

Giveaways and Discounts:

One of the things I love about publishing Macaroni Kid is that I get to help parents save money and discover great things to do.

The Basically Ballroom giveaway does both. Save money with a great activity for date night (two FREE ballroom dancing lessons) or discover if the missing sports passion in your child is dancing (and it's dancing that boys can do) with four free lessons.

Phineas and Ferb are coming to the XL Center for one day only on November 19th. I heard it's as funny as the TV show and much more exciting because it's live. Macaroni Kid readers can save more than 10% off each Phineas and Ferb ticket.

Halloween:

Only a few more days until Halloween. My children finally have costumes. Once they were in the costume store, confronted by the huge selection, they each picked a different costume than they originally wanted. I know my two oldest, my 12 and nine year-old daughters, will be happy.

I am not so sure my three year-old will truly understand that on Halloween he's not going to be the character he was asking about over the last month. We'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

If your child came up with an awesome, unique Halloween costume, then snap their picture and submit it to the Heidi Klum and Patch.com costume contest.

There are so many great Halloween activities, I had to put them in their own post. The Master Halloween Guide has links to the Halloween crafts and recipes that have been posted on Macaroni Kid this year.

The Halloween Weekend events guide lets you know where to get scared and where to find organized trick-or-treating. Please note that the trick-or-treating organized by town will welcome only residents from that town.

For parents of teens, I am excited to point out that Westfield Trumbull mall is allowing teens as old as 16 to participate in the mall-wide trick-or-treating. All of the other organized trick-or-treating is limited to ages 12 and younger or 10 and younger.

We also have lime-toasted pumpkins seeds for a recipe (older kids can do this themselves and roast them in a 350 degree oven) and a ghostly-feet craft great for littler hands or fun-loving bigger kids.

Tech Fest:

It is all over the news that careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are excellent for job stability, earning potential, and to help America stay competitive in an  increasingly high-tech world market. In my former life as a working mom (before becoming a work-at-home-mom), I was a mechanical engineer.

I love to help kids discover the excitement of science which is why I am taking my daughters and son to Tech Fest put on by the Nonnewaug High School FIRST Robotics team. The admission is free. Also, my husband will be there for the astronomy class he teaches for children 8-18 and he'll have some cool stuff to check out.

This Weekend:

Not every activity has to be about Halloween! Along with Tech Fest, check out the other weekend highlights.

Plan Ahead:

Planning ahead is especially important when Mom wants to get out of the house by herself. Alef Bet preschool is hosting a Mom's Night Out for moms of all ages and whether you're a mom or not which has been postponed due to the storm.
