Snowy Days

Editor's Note

By Kim McNeill January 19, 2012

- Being a fan of Dr. Mel and his forecasts, I was saddened to hear of his passing. I will miss his reports.

The weather looks like we will get some more snow tomorrow and this weekend. After sledding, building a snow man, making snow angels, and building a fort for the snowball fight, be sure to enjoy hot chocolate and popcorn. That is our favorite way of warming up after playing in the snow.

- Where are your favorite sledding hills? Send your suggestions to kimm@macaronikid.com and let me know. While we usually sled down a hill in our front yard, my older kids are ready for something more adventurous. I often see lots of cars parked on Heritage Road next to the golf course in Southbury. What other great locations are there?

- Looking for other ways to enjoy your indoor time? How about a little kitchen science? You can make popcorn kernels float with a few household items. We have a fun craft for the kids to try out: make your own glass magnets. There is nothing like a little spice to warm you up! Try this recipe for enchiladas.

- If you hurry, there is still time to enter our giveaway for a family four pack of tickets to Stepping Stones which can be used on the date of your choosing now through April so you can enjoy the Run! Jump! Fly! exhibit. How is the exhibit? Check out my review of Run! Jump! Fly! at Stepping Stones

Speaking of Stepping Stones, I will be announcing a special Stepping Stones giveaway on Facebook tomorrow.

Our Monster Jam at the XL Center giveaway (you get to choose the date you go) is ending next week. That isn't much time to enter. Don't miss out--enter today!

- Since I receive some nice feedback on this section (thanks, D.), I decided to leave it in for a second week:

It's time to register for kindergarten. My guy is old enough, but I still can hardly believe he could be going to a building filled with hundreds of kids in just eight months. If you want to be sure your child is ready for kindergarten, check out the free resources at Get Ready to Read for free early learning resources, Starfall for free phonics and reading lessons, or head to the book store or library for Bob Books which teach kids how to read by introducing a few new sounds or sight words at a time and helps them practice.

- By the way, I love hearing what you think. Just e-mail me at kimm@macaronikid.com with suggestions, your favorite places to take your kids, events I should include in the calendar, anything! If you host an event and want to get the word out, just fill out our handy event submission form.

Check back often for updates and don't forget Facebook, where new items are often posted.
