St. James Lutheran Preschool

The pre-school recognizes that a child’s work is play.  As a child plays, he or she learns about the world.  Our classroom is divided into several interest areas to encourage a child’s curiosity and creativity.  A child’s positive self-image is fostered through mastering new concepts and experiences.  Positive social skills are encouraged through group activities.  Literacy is introduced through a print rich environment, phonemic awareness activities (songs, rhymes, and poems) and high-quality children’s literature.  Mathematical concepts are introduced by blocks building, water play, cooking and by exploration of simple experiments.  Fine muscle control is mastered by the use of table activities, puzzles, painting, cutting, gluing, and clay.  Gross motor coordination is encouraged by outdoor play. Brown Tufts Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten

Montessori classrooms offer a mixed-age setting, which means that 3-, 4-, and 5-year olds all share their experiences and support each other. The youngest learn from the oldest, who quickly become leaders. “I think one of our strongest points is that the children come together to form a community. They learn to take care of each other and to respect their peers, their environment, and themselves,” said Nana Sledzieski, the Head of School. It is the aim of the teachers to create a space where children learn to be capable, confident, and respectful in a calm environment. Contact Nana Sledzieski at 203-263-4600 or e-mail Nana@BrownTuftsMontessori.com.
