In an easily accessible location in Waterbury, off exit 25 on I84, sits a gem of a store. The outside is unassuming except for a jaunty sign announcing, “Sundae Spa”. I took my daughter for a haircut and a manicure and went home with a number of the Sundae Spa products to review.

Sundae Spa is a full-service, licensed, candy-themed spa and store specifically for kids. With a brightly colored interior, Sundae Spa welcomes under-18-year-olds for facials, manicures, pedicures, and haircuts. Once their service is over, the customers can indulge in an ice cream sundae included with their service.

While we were there, my daughter received services from Bubble Gum and Milkshake (all of the employees have a special names) for her haircut and manicure. The ladies were very nice and my daughter loved her metallic blue polish with silver crackle. I was impressed with the colorful interior and the full incorporation of the sweets theme--complete with a candy shoppe looking soap display. There is merchandise to browse and purchase everywhere. I was impressed at the number of cute items that could be purchased for less than $5.

There are a great range of ages that use the services. I saw an older teen getting a manicure. The two birthday parties that were there at the same time had kids that looked to be 8 years old and excited and happy to be at the party.

Just before we were about to leave, a four year old came in scared to get her hair washed in the big sink. The hair dresser and the owner of the spa were very sweet with the girl and they found a way to get her to do it without tears. Before you think the spa is just for girls, Milkshake told me that they have boys coming in as well. They get tips (where the edges of spiky hair are colored) and tattoos and haircuts and a sundae, of course.

The Sundae Spa makes and sells its own brand of soaps, lotions, body sprays, lip balms and scrubs all in the Sundae Spa theme of sweets. The soap I received was shaped like a popsicle, the bath fizz was a mini cupcake complete with icing, and the sugar scrub looked like a parfait topped with whipped cream and pineapple pieces (pineapple was the scent for all of my samples). The items looked realistic looking, simply adorable, and had just enough scent to leave a light fragrance.

You might think I would tell you what my kids thought of the items. They liked them and loved the look of them. They loved the shaped and the detail and the scent. But in reality, I’m using them just as much as the kids. All of the products were nicely scented and worked as they should. The spray is the same they used in my daughter’s hair when she was finished her cut and made her hair smell lovely. The sugar scrub, since it is designed for younger skin, has only a little sugar in it so it won’t be irritating.

Along with spa services, for which appointments are recommended on the weekends, there are two birthday party rooms. The parties take place in the party rooms keeping the rest of the spa available for standard services.

My pick for the best service is definitely the hair cut with hair scent for $19.95. Along with purchasing spa products, you make your own spa products, get services for your dolls, get ear piercing, hair wraps and feathers, organic hair coloring, waxing services, and glitter body tattoos. Sundae Spa has a lot of products like jewelry, small games, science-oriented kits, and accessories through out the whole store.

A birthday at the salon can include a ‘dig’ party (finding dinosaur items or charms by chipping away at a block) or make-your-own soap or hair styles and manicures. There are seven different party types and the ability to customize the party add-ons. Birthday parties for eight girls start at $280 plus pizza provided, if you choose, and 18% gratuity.
