Age 7 and the Orthodontist
Many parents want to know if or when their child should visit the orthodontist. Whether there is a known concern or not, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be evaluated at age 7. This a magical age for an orthodontic consultation because this is a time when your child’s adult molars (also known as the “6-year-old molars”) have likely come in, but they are also still growing rapidly. This makes age 7 the perfect time to evaluate your child’s bite and jaw alignment with the ability to affect positive change if needed. Orthodontic monitoring can be a critical part of maintaining your child’s overall oral health, and many children who come to us for early evaluations do not need interceptive treatment. In fact, Dr. Aronson’s preference is to watch and wait whenever possible. However, there are other cases where an ounce of prevention will stop much larger issues from forming. For these children, early treatment can guide proper jaw development and ensure that future teeth come in without disruption.
